What is the I-485?

USCIS Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, is the application a non-citizen already in the United States files to become a lawful permanent resident, also known as a green card holder. It is one of the most-tracked immigration forms in the country, and the one most people are referring to when they say "my green card application."

Who files an I-485?

You file an I-485 if you are physically present in the United States and eligible to adjust to permanent resident status based on:

  • Employment-based petition (I-140 approved, priority date current, EB-1 through EB-5)
  • Family-based petition (I-130 filed by a U.S. citizen or LPR family member)
  • Marriage to a U.S. citizen
  • Asylum or refugee status after a year of physical presence
  • Diversity Visa lottery winner already in the U.S.
  • Special categories like U visa, T visa, VAWA, and others

If you are outside the U.S., you do not file an I-485. You go through consular processing at a U.S. embassy or consulate instead.

What happens after you file

After USCIS accepts your I-485, you typically receive:

  • Form I-797 Receipt Notice with a 13-character receipt number you can track
  • Biometrics appointment notice for fingerprints and a photo
  • Optional employment authorization (I-765 EAD) and travel document (I-131 Advance Parole) if you applied for them with the I-485
  • Possible interview at a USCIS field office
  • Final decision: approval, denial, or a Request for Evidence (RFE)

How to track your I-485

Your I-485 receipt number is 13 characters long and starts with one of these service-center prefixes:

  • IOE — National Benefits Center (electronic)
  • EAC — Vermont Service Center
  • LIN — Nebraska Service Center
  • MSC — National Benefits Center (paper)
  • NBC — National Benefits Center
  • SRC — Texas Service Center
  • WAC — California Service Center
  • YSC — Potomac Service Center

You can check your status manually at case-status.uscis.gov, or use an app like VisaWatch that monitors the case for you and sends a push notification the moment USCIS updates the status.
